1999年7月本科毕业于南开大学化学学院；2002年7月和2007年1月毕业于北京大学光华管理学院，分别获得管理学硕士和博士学位。2007年3月进入北京科技大学经济管理学院，2013年9月晋升为教授。其中，2012年9月至2013年8月期间为布朗大学经济系访问副教授，2019年8月至2020年10月期间为哥伦比亚大学教育学院访问学者。
胡枫教授的主要研究领域为劳动力迁移、教育、科研创新等。已在Nature Human Behavior、 Journal of Comparative Economics 、《管理世界》、《金融研究》等国内外期刊发表论文20余篇，并主持或参与多项国家自然科学基金项目和省部级项目。
胡枫教授还担任以下期刊或项目的匿名评审人：Nature Human Behavior, Journal of Public Economics, Journal of Development Economics, Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, Journal of Economic Growth, Economics of Education Review, Urban Studies, World Development, China Economic Review, Economic Inquiry, 管理世界, 金融研究等期刊；国家自然科学基金管理学部、长江学者等的同行评议专家。
- 研究报告《外贸对经济社会发展作用的量化分析与预测》获2010年全国商务发展研究成果奖研究报告类一等奖（由李善同研究员主持，本人排名第四）
- 论文“社会网络与农户借贷行为：来自中国家庭动态跟踪调查（CFPS）的证据”获《金融研究》第4届（2012年度）优秀论文奖（与陈玉宇合作，本人为论文第一作者）
