In 1952, the University of Science and Technology Beijing was established by the mining and metallurgy departments of Tianjin University (formerly Beiyang University), Tsinghua University and other six famous domestic universities, named Beijing Iron and Steel Institute. In 1960, it was renamed Beijing Iron and Steel Institute and was approved as a national key higher education institution. In 1984, it became one of the first universities in the country to formally establish a graduate school. In 1988, it was renamed University of Science and Technology Beijing. In May 1997, the university was one of the first universities to enter the national "211 Project" construction. In 2006, the university became one of the first universities to build the "985 Project" superior discipline innovation platform. In 2017, the university was selected as a national "double first-class" construction university. In 2018, the university was approved to be jointly built by the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense and the Ministry of Education. [2]

As of July 2024, USTB covers an area of about 803,900 square meters, with a total building area of 996,800 square meters. [2] The campuses are: Benbu Xueyuan Road Campus, Guanzhuang Campus, Changping Campus, Shunde Innovation College, Xiongan campus (under construction). [9] The university consists of 16 schools offering 61 undergraduate programs. It has 19 post-doctoral research centers, 20 doctoral programs in first-level disciplines, 31 master programs in first-level disciplines, 4 doctoral programs and 17 master programs. [3] The physical collection of the library is more than 2.583 million volumes (pieces); There are a total of 3478 faculty members, including 2198 full-time teachers; As of December 2023, the university has more than 27,000 full-time students, including 13,743 undergraduate students, 12,998 graduate students, 733 international students, and 7,517 continuing education students.
